One thing I've noticed over the last few weeks with this HEM affair is how serious and dour the discussion about supporting Melbourne Victory has become.
I am not saying that supporting the team is not important. I recognise that all the effort in active support is not easy and there is a lot of emotional commitment involved. However it is after all a game of football. It is supposed to be a recreational activity. Is supposed to be fun.
If this HEM thing is 'forcing' us to be more together, it may be our chance to re-introduce the fun aspect of supporting the OSS way.
I certainly will bring my kazoo and I would encourage others to do the same. Ten or even more kazoos in unison singing 7NA or the Aida march would be a hoot!
We also should re-introduce the balloons that travel a long way. Especially if we are going to be positioned in the front.
Let's be a bit different! Let's have some fun! _________________

I don't wish to offend anyone as this is just my opinion. I'm all for having flags, balloons, standards, streamers whatever, but I draw the line at kazoos. It just reminds me of Adelaide supporters with their party blowers. As I stated, just my opinion, but I just think football & kazoos don't mix. I've never really sat with you lot, so cant say I've heard too much kazoo action, but it seems a little cheesy to me. I know there alot of kids involved who may enjoy it, but it's not for me & mine.
Sorry gweeds, must be the first time I haven't agreed with you. |

No probs slab. It's good to disagree once in a while!
Only CLM and myself brought kazoos at a match so far. The idea came after TD banned 'musical instruments' so we decided to be 'rebels' and bring the kazoo. I wanted to bring those things that whistle up and down as well but never got around it.
My suggestion was a reaction against some of the dogmatism that seems to exists amongst supporter groups.
Groups coalesce around an agreed idea. The north wants to create a tifo with flags, banners etc. and that's great. But they seems to have quite strong ideas about how the 'real tifo' is. The South is of course more relaxed, but I haven't brought my flag since I have been there because I believe (may be wrong) that there waiving is frowned upon. Flags are only to be hanged over a balcony or something similar. No jumping and definitely no Oles!
I think that at OSS, especially having kids around we can be a bit less constrained. When we announced OSS in the dark side in October 2006 we proudly stated "We are dags and we don't care." and I think that still holds true!
I also proposed once that we bring soap bubbles, but alas, apparently I was told that a famous London-based club does that already so no bubbles!
Another thing that I would like to bring is the good old fashioned rattles.
I think it is a British thing so there should be no problem with the South end!
I want to look like the guy on the right.

They are cool. Where do you get them?
I'm in favour of fun, and not taking ourselves too seriously.
(But that doesn't mean I want to end up like the Fanatics.) |

I have seen them in toy stores and also musical stores. They are more common in Britain as they were apparently quite widespread amongst football spectators in the 1950's. _________________

For me active support is a break from what is considered normal, it's fun letting some inabitions go.
Try not to take myself too seriously will be happy as long as the group stays away from attention seeking clowns.
Pity about the fun spoiling powers that be... |

I like this interpretation of active support!
I would also like to meet a clown who is not attention seeking.
Regarding the whistle mentioned above (by gweeds?) I will procure one if affordable and bring it to games...
| Quote: | | The slide whistle is a member of the woodwind instrument family and creates a different pitch as the musician blows into it and moves the piston to a different position within the tube. It is also known as the swanee whistle or the piston flute |
I think the "downward slide" effect would be very good to hear, en masse, following a near miss at goal.
Let's bring the whimsy back1 |

One of the funniest things EVER, from my memories of standing with everyone at the back of the little triangle bit was,
1) Standing next to Gweeds with him playing his kazoo, and CLM one row over doing the same, with me bent over in fits of laughter.
2) PMSL @ Rollins, all muscle bound and big voice chanting, blowing up rocket balloons and laughing at the 19th consecutive one to unsuccessfully make it past the overhang. |

During a televised sporting event the attention seeking clown strangely appears to be conserving energy, he or she will use this stored up energy in short bursts, greatly increasing chances of achieving the ultimate, getting on tv.
They tend to congregate where the camera will most likely pan, thus are most likely to stand in or around active areas. During these camera pans the attention seeking clown with an abundance of energy will jump around wildly in an effort to draw all the attention.
Accessories for an attention seeking clown include gimmicky advertising such as big hands & thunder sticks, this further increases the chance of getting on tv & is the much preferred fan for the corporates.
Optional accessories for increasing chances include wigs & face paint, these devious creatures with hidden identities can not be trusted, attention seeking or not. |

That was 'The Chaser'. And the term for someone trying to get on television in the background is 'bonehead'. _________________
