There has been discussion in various threads about making an OSS banner.

I would like to start a thread about the 'practicalities' of making one. And I have done a bit of research and I will start with some of the methods that we could use.

Applique This is simply sowing material on other material. A fantastic example of an applique flag is Rollins one. The advantage is that it is very durable and can be washed easily. However it is more labour intensive as it requires cutting pieces of cloth and using a sowing machine to apply the design on the banner. If the design gets 'complicated' this is not the method to use.

An alternative is to use a material called Vliesofix which can be cut and simply applied on the cloth of the banner by ironing. (this is the method shown on Socceroo 06 signature.

Screen printing This method is what Topher is suggesting for the T-Shirts. The advantage of this method is that once the screen print is done it can be used again and again. The down side is that making a screen requires skill and it cannot be done just like that.

Stencilling This is probably the easiest method. What it involves is to cut a stencil and paint over it The paint used is either a special stencil paint or acrylic paint mixed with a special paint medium that makes it go better on the fabric and it does not make it go stiff when dry (which then makes it peel off).

The paint can be applied either with a foam roller, or special stencil brushes. The outcome is not always perfect (the paint can 'bleed' under the stencil) but it may be OK for our purposes.

YAY, I can get on at work!!!

I'm going to get a banner made, going to get some kids from school, OR my work Colleague to do a design and paint it on a large piece of white material. It WILL look good, our school celebrates graffitti as an artform and takes pride in developing such artists.

This will not be something that we may want as a permanent thing, but will be something that we can use until we decide on something more permanent and representative.

I love the idea of using graffiti artists DD

Gweeds - good ideas there

a lot perhaps depends on what skills we have within our group
and how much we are prepared to spend
